Stevenson, a redshirt sophomore, has overcome three injuries from his first two college seasons to become the Cougars’ leading receiver. “It’s been a painful journey,” Stevenson told the Houston Chronicle. “I knew at the end of the road there was some light. I’m blessed and grateful. I know how fast this game can be taken away from you.”

Kent State’s Antwan Dixon is this week’s nominee for the 2018 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Dixon, a junior, missed the past two seasons because of aplastic anemia, a blood disorder that required a life-saving bone marrow transplant. He had led the team with 355 receiving yards as a freshman in 2015.

Flowers’ father was shot and killed by a stray bullet outside his home when Flowers was 7. His mother died of cancer when he was in high school. In November of 2014, Flowers’ older brother was shot and killed while playing football with kids — the same week Flowers was named the Bulls’ starting quarterback for the first time.

Sherels suffered through a life-threatening intestinal illness in August that required multiple surgeries. The Golden Gophers’ linebackers coach had more than 18 feet of his small intestine removed, in addition to the right side of his colon and his transverse colon removed.

Ploudre broke both bones in his lower left leg while entering his junior season in high school, in 2011. Some doctors believed he would never play football, much less be able to walk again. The ensuing recovery required seven different surgeries and a 49 week recovery.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pound linebacker has enjoyed a breakout campaign for the Knights, as he leads the American Athletic Conference in sacks (8.5) and is third in tackles for loss (12).

He returned to Fayetteville last Thursday and played in Saturday’s game against No. 1 Alabama, having prepared for the Crimson Tide from home while staying in touch with his teammates and coaches.

Oklahoma State’s Vincent Taylor is this week’s nominee for the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Taylor and his family lost their home 11 years ago in Hurricane Katrina, forcing them to relocate to San Antonio. The Taylors had initially stayed back in New Orleans for about a week after the hurricane hit, and during that time the then-10-year-old Taylor witnessed a number of gruesome images.

Washington State’s Riley Sorenson is this week’s nominee for the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Over the past nine months alone, Sorenson, a senior center, lost his father and mother to a heart attack and cancer, respectively. On top of that, Sorenson was diagnosed with testicular cancer just days after his mother’s funeral in May. He had surgery to remove a testicle and, after receiving five opinions, was eventually told that chemotherapy would not be needed.

Moore, a redshirt senior safety, has overcome a number of obstacles in earning an academic scholarship at TCU, from growing up in inner-city Los Angeles and being homeless during his youth, to having a father who is in prison for life and a mother who was a victim of domestic abuse and sexual assault.​

Pittsburgh’s James Conner is the first weekly nominee for the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Conner, a redshirt junior running back, announced in December that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. The Erie, Pa., native said all along that he would be ready for the start of the 2016 season, and after 12 rounds of chemotherapy, he beat the disease and was back on the field for the Panthers.

The Orange Bowl Committee (OBC) announced today that the dates for two College Football Playoff (CFP) Semifinals at the Capital One Orange Bowl have been revised. The Playoff Semifinal in 2018 will now be played Saturday, Dec. 29, and the Playoff Semifinal for 2024 will be played on Saturday, Dec. 28. The games were both originally scheduled for Dec. 31. The Playoff Semifinal for 2021 will remain on Friday, Dec. 31, as that is the nationally recognized holiday for New Year’s Day.
