Desperation Pass Upsets Maroons
A desperation 72-yard touchdown pass from tailback Boyd Brumbaugh to Ernie Hefferle spelled an end to Mississippi State’s upset hopes as Duquesne edged the Bulldogs, 13-12.
The Maroons scored first on a 10-yard run by Ike Pickle. Following a Brumbaugh 1-yard run, Mississippi State edged on top once again when Pee Wee Armstrong hit Fred Walters from 40 yards out to make it 12-7.
Then in the fourth period, the Brumbaugh-to-Hefferle pass gave the Dukes the win. Missed extra points on both first-half touchdowns came back to haunt Mississippi State as the final margin was one point.
CBS Radio once again broadcasted the game nationwide with Orange Bowl Hall of Fame inductee Ted Husing calling the action.
