Dr. Eduardo Padrón to Receive Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award at Orange Bowl Food & Wine Celebration Presented by Florida Blue
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. — Dr. Eduardo Padrón, one of the nation’s most respected leaders of higher education and Past President of Miami Dade College, will receive the Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award at the Orange Bowl Food & Wine Celebration presented by Florida Blue on Friday, September 20 at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.
The Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award is awarded to an individual(s) who has made extraordinary efforts to promote and enhance social conditions around them in uncharted ways, and whose contributions have been outstanding, unique and significantly impacted the South Florida Community.
Padrón is nationally known for transforming Miami Dade College to the largest and most diverse public institution for higher learning in America. Under Padrón’s leadership, Miami Dade College enrolls more minority students than any other college in the country.
In 1970, Padrón started his 50-year career with the college as a professor and quickly climbed his way up the ranks, becoming president of the Wolfson campus in downtown Miami in 1980 and president of the entire college in 1995. He assisted in the creation of the Inter-American Campus in Little Havana in the 1970s, which is now the Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, the nation’s largest bi-lingual higher education center.
At the age of 15, Padrón arrived in America as a Cuban refugee. Three years ago, Padrón received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, the highest civilian honor. His achievements have been recognized by the nation’s most accredited media outlets such as The New York Times and he has received numerous prestigious awards.
“Dr. Eduardo Padron is one of the nation’s most iconic figures in higher education who made affordable college a reality. His impact in South Florida is beyond measure and his contributions are significant,” said Orange Bowl Committee President & Chair José Romano. “It is an absolute honor to recognize such an impactful leader in our local community who embodies what the Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award represents.”
