MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (orangebowl.org) – The Orange Bowl Committee announced that Alcivial Henrisme, a student-athlete from Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, is the fifth recipient of the Orange Bowl Beigel-Feis-Hixon Valor Award.
Henrisme, who was nominated for the award by his high school guidance counselor, overcame life-altering family trauma and financial struggles to excel in the classroom while balancing the demand of competing in his school’s football, basketball and baseball programs.
The annual Orange Bowl Beigel-Feis-Hixon Valor Award honors Marjory Stoneman Douglas coaches Scott Beigel (cross-country coach and geography teacher), Aaron Feis (assistant football coach and security guard) and Chris Hixon (wrestling coach and athletic director) who lost their lives protecting their colleagues and students in the senseless tragedy that occurred on Feb. 14, 2018 at the Parkland school. The award is designed to salute an outstanding South Florida student-athlete who exhibits valor and courage in the face of adversity, and consists of a $10,000 scholarship.
“The Orange Bowl Committee is extremely proud to announce Alcivial Henrisme as this year’s winner of the Orange Bowl Beigel-Feis-Hixon Valor Award,” said Orange Bowl Committee President & Chair Frank Gonzalez. “The courage he has shown to overcome some of life’s toughest challenges and progress into a self-sufficient scholar-athlete and a role model for his peers on and off the field speaks to how well-deserving he is for this award and scholarship.”
At a young age, Henrisme and his sister were placed in foster care. They were later adopted, but their adoptive mother struggled financially and worked tirelessly in order to make ends meet. Sports became a passion and an outlet for him, and he leaned on them as an escape from reality. Although financial restrictions limited him from the number of sports he could play growing up, Henrisme persevered to become an exceptional student-athlete in high school and will graduate this spring in the top 10 percent of his class. During his senior year as captain of the varsity football team, Henrisme led the team in sacks and won the team’s leadership award.
“Alcivial is an outstanding student who is respectful, responsible, motivated, diligent, hard-working, and he has the ability to understand abstract concepts and ideas,” said Director of High School Counseling Services Sherri Boyce. “Alcivial is a star football player, a successful student in advanced classes, an innate leader, and a role model on and off the field.”
Henrisme will be enrolling in Valdosta State University this Fall and will be recognized during the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl on December 30 at Hard Rock Stadium.
