ORANGE BOWL GIVES BACK TO SOUTH FLORIDA TEACHERS DURING "EXTRA YARD FOR TEACHERS WEEK"
MIAMI LAKES, Florida (orangebowl.org) – The Orange Bowl Committee is commemorating the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation’s “Extra Yard for Teachers Week” by unveiling a new elementary school media center, launching two exciting contests and surprising a South Florida teacher with a $1,000 DonorsChoose gift card.
“Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) Week” (September 16-24, 2022) is an annual event during which universities, conferences, bowl games, ESPN and others in the college football space come together to celebrate and recognize teachers across the country.
On Friday, September 16, the Orange Bowl Committee cut the ribbon on a brand-new media center at Coral Cove Elementary School in Miramar, Fla. as part of its Orange Bowl Media Center Makeover Project powered by Extra Yard for Teachers. The school’s media center received new, modernized classroom furniture such as book shelves, tables, desks and chairs, as well as soft, colorful seating areas and creative spaces to encourage innovative learning.
Since the Orange Bowl Media Center Makeover Project launched in 2017, the Orange Bowl Committee and the College Football Playoff Foundation have committed more than $100,000 annually to provide enhanced learning resources, equipment and materials to give students optimal opportunities to achieve academic success.
Coral Cove Elementary was the eleventh South Florida school to receive the makeover since the program’s inception, with South Miami Heights Elementary School’s renovated media center set to debut later this year. Elementary schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties can apply for a 2022-23 media center makeover beginning in mid-October at orangebowl.org/mediacentermakeover/.
Continuing the celebration of “Extra Yard for Teachers Week,” the Orange Bowl Committee surprised Mr. Ralph Santiago of Coral Cove Elementary School with a $1,000 DonorsChoose gift card. The donation can be used towards classroom projects and resources for students. Mr. Santiago, a third-grade teacher, was nominated for the gift card by his administrators.
The Orange Bowl Committee also launched its annual Orange Bowl Creative Art Contest, which affords students K-12 in Miami-Dade and Broward schools the opportunity to win a multitude of prizes by submitting artwork depicting the theme “Together We Shine Brighter”. All winners will receive tickets to the 2022 AutoNation Orange Bowl Basketball Classic (Dec. 17 at FLA Live Arena) and the grand prize winner will receive tickets to the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl (Dec. 30 at Hard Rock Stadium). Information on the contest can be found at orangebowl.org/cac/.
Capping off “Extra Yard for Teachers Week,” Orange Bowl is launching its “Tag-a-Teacher” social media campaign in partnership with the CFP Foundation. The campaign awards a $500 DonorsChoose gift card to a South Florida teacher every week throughout the 2022 college football season. Teachers can be nominated on Twitter by replying to @OrangeBowl’s tweet and tagging the educator.
